St George, a top destination in 2007 |

St George - in the top 10 of this year
St. George vacations offer an attractive colonial town nestled in the hillsides above a horseshoe-shaped harbor. Low, whitewashed and terracotta-roofed buildings follow the sweep of the bay, standing out against the rich green of the surrounding vegetation. During the eighteenth century, the town was partly gutted by three devastating fires, leading to legislation that restricted the height of buildings and banned the use timber. The result of all this is a town dominated by British colonial architecture but with a distinctly Mediterranean feel which lures visitors to St. George vacations. St. George won't take more than a day to explore from your St. George vacations, and it's worth taking time away from the beach to do so.

St George vacations are great
Grenada is a rolling, mountainous island, covered with fragrant spice trees and rare tropical flowers you can see on St. George vacations. Bordered by stunning beaches, and dotted with picturesque towns, this verdant island has long been a major source of nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and cocoa. The seductive feel of St. George vacations drifts through the colorful Saturday markets and Grenada's dense forests. In the interior of this volcanic island are cascading rivers and waterfalls, lush rainforests, and one of the most breathtakingly beautiful mountain lakes imaginable. On St. George vacations you will discover why this city is widely held to be the loveliest in the Caribbean. |
|
And more ...
Though the market is at its liveliest on Saturday morning, you'll discover on your St. George vacations that most shops close on Saturday afternoons, Sundays and public holidays, making the town a quiet place during those times - except when a cruise ship docks, in which case the town explodes into a frenzy of activity. Market stalls spring up on shore, restaurants and bars fill up, street vendors and local guides come out in force, and all visitors on St. George vacations become the focus of a barrage of offers from taxi drivers and spice sellers. |

Other about St George |
|
On St. George vacations you can discover a bit of the colorful history of the city. Following the withdrawal of Bridgetown, Barbados in the mid 1880's St. George went on to become the replacement capital of the former British colony of the Windward Islands. The city is home of St. George’s University School of Medicine. In 2004 St. George and the rest of Grenada were severely battered by Hurricane Ivan. The hurricane left significant destruction across the island and crippled much of the island's infrastructure. It was estimated that some 90% of the islands homes had sustained damage and the nutmeg trees which are key to Grenada's economy were devastated. A year later with the help of International donors in (Canada, the United States, and the European Union) Grenada had experienced a significant turnaround in rebuilding efforts. |
