St George cruise - pretty beaches, a wide variety of water sports and more
Cruise ships tie up at three harbors in Bermuda: St. George in the East End, the Royal Naval Dockyard in the West End, and Hamilton Harbour at the City of Hamilton. While the cruise experience isn't for everyone, it's very appealing to some people, and is certainly a carefree, all-inclusive vacation. Ships from the East Coast of the United States reach Bermuda in a little over a day. You'll spend a few full days (usually 3) moored at the island, exploring during the day and returning to the ship at night. It's convenient and comfortable -- like having a luxury hotel and restaurant that travels with you. Of course, that's also its major disadvantage. Most cruisers don't get to know the real Bermuda as well as those who stay in hotels ashore. For instance, cruise-ship passengers generally eat all their meals aboard the ship -- mainly because they've already paid for the meals as part of their cruise price -- and so they miss out on sampling Bermuda's cuisine. They also rarely get to meet and interact with Bermudians the way land-based visitors do. If you're more interested in historic Bermuda, make sure that your ship is scheduled to anchor at St. George, at the eastern tip of the island. With its narrow lanes and old buildings and streets, St. George has been called the Bermudian equivalent of Colonial Williamsburg. Your ship will probably offer a guided tour of the town as a shore excursion; we've provided a self-guided tour elsewhere if you'd rather explore on your own. St. George has become more of a shopping destination than it used to be, but this still isn't the primary place to come for shopping. Depending on the cruise line, its schedules, and the current tides, some cruise ships dock at both St. George and the City of Hamilton while in Bermuda. Ships often plan to dock at St. George, but find that they cannot do so because of the tides. Celebrity Cruises: Noted for modern, state-of-the-art, large-but-not-mammoth cruise ships, and for exceptional cuisine and service, Celebrity is unpretentious but classy. It's several notches above mass market but still competitively priced. Cabins are roomy and well equipped, and the decor in general is elegantly modern, eschewing the glitz of some competitors. Celebrity attracts a broad range of passengers, including families drawn by the line's children's programs. Its Zenith and Horizon both sail 7-night Bermuda itineraries from New York between May and October. They spend 2 nights in St. George and 2 nights in the City of Hamilton. Runs from other East Coast cities are interspersed throughout the season.
